Blog #1

One of the most important ideas I found in this article was the use of social networking sites (tagging, and posts) to organize and propel political events, demonstrations, and elections. With networking sites being used in relation to institutions as large as world politics I am excited to witness and interact with social networking that promotes other areas of social awareness. Such as promotion for art shows, films, community events, local activities ect... I think that we all need to think about our individual power and collective power when it comes to posting links on twitter, facebook ect.
One of the most exciting web applications I have seen in this past year (really it is more of a feature) are the options google images has added. Adding the ability to sort through picture search results by color scheme. This added a new dimension to narrowing down your search results, and helps you truly find what you want in the seamlessly never ending collection of web images.

  1. I too find it cool, interesting and revolutionary how business are becoming apart of the social networking world. And, it is unfair to say they "are" becoming when in reality they have been there. It is just interesting how, for example, Twitter allows one to somewhat be even more connected to their interest. If that may be art, music or celebrities. Recently because of this class I have been getting more interested with the advantages Twitter does offer. I have been updated now with art gallery openings and upcoming contemporary artist.

  3. I would've been curious to hear a bit more about how your future goals connected with the reading. I definitely think you're correct, that "... we all need to think about our individual power and collective power when it comes to posting links on twitter, facebook etc." I like the idea of collective power in terms of social action, and I think social media can play a huge role in this. Those who work for nonprofits, for example, really need to think about how to best harness this power. In your next post, make sure to make a few more direct references/nods to the reading itself just so I can really see that you're doing a good job of understanding the key points. Thanks.

  4. I have not heard of searching for images by color scheme. As for our individual and collective power, I think that individually we have less power and more voice on the web and collectively we have both.

  5. The internet is an amazing political tool. It was only a matter of time before most politicians realized this. There is a new darker wave of internet movements going on though. The internet movement anonymous is a good example of this. As the world becomes more reliant on the internet those who understand how it works gain power. Anonymous has gathered an army of angry youth and offered them the means to attack. They often use DDoS attacks to take down a companies websites if they disagree with the companies actions. They do this by distributing software to people who want to help that can be run to lend your computers strength to these attacks. Their motto is "Because none of us are as cruel as all of us" I wonder how much more internet activities we will see as the politics online increases.
